I created OctoMadness, a large-scale 3D-printed zoetrope originally developed for the 2014 KLIK Animation Festival, inspired by the idea of taking animation off the screen and turning it into something physical.
I designed and animated a series of highly flexible characters, using their exaggerated movement to explore the freedom and possibilities of animation. The digital animation was then broken down frame by frame, with each pose 3D printed, assembled and hand-painted before being arranged around the physical zoetrope.
The project combined 3D animation, character design, 3D printing and hands-on fabrication, transforming a digital animation into a working physical installation. One of my favourite aspects of the piece is that the audience can see every individual frame as a physical object before watching those static sculptures come together as a fluid animation when the zoetrope begins to move.
